Intent- what do we teach?                                                                                                                                                                       

At Warden Hill Infant School, we believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The principal aim of Religious Education in our school, as stated in the agreed syllabus is "to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living." It plays an important role, along with other curriculum areas, particularly personal wellbeing, in promoting social awareness and understanding in our children. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens. We aim to help them to recognise many of our own school values reflected in the beliefs and teachings of world religions.

Implementation- how do we teach it?                                                                     

We use the Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education developed by Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Luton Borough Councils as the basis for the curriculum.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children will encounter Christianity and other faiths as part of their growing sense of self, their community and their place within it.                                                                                             

KS1-Christianity is studied (and one other principal religion in some depth)                                                                                                                  Consideration of other religions and non-religious worldviews can occur at any key stage, as appropriate to the school context. We value the religious background of all children. We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children.

Impact -what impact is our teaching having?                                                                     

The children at Warden Hill Infant School enjoy learning about other religions and why people choose, or choose not to follow a religion. Through their RE learning, the children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world developing an understanding of other people's cultures and ways of life. As such, RE, is invaluable in an ever changing world.                                                                                                                                                                                         

We encourage our parents to speak with us about any areas of the RE curriculum that they would like further clarification on. Parents do have the right to withdraw their child from RE lessons following consultation with the school.
